THE RIGHT DISTANCE
(La giusta distanza) Carlo Mazzacurati's compelling mystery unfolds with remarkable assurance and a wonderfully atmospheric sense of place. Teenager Giovanni (Giovanni Capovilla) has ambitions to become a journalist and is working as a stringer for a local paper. He is advised to keep the right distance between himself and the people he writes about. When beautiful new teacher Mara (Valentina Lodovini) arrives in Concadalbero, she attracts the interest of Giovanni and virtually every other man in town, especially lonely Tunisian-born motor mechanic Hassan (Ahmed Hafiene). As Giovanni reports on neighborhood news and strange happenings, he finds himself drawn into tragic events that reflect the prejudices and closed minds of his close-knit community. Set among the Po River flatlands, this deeply involving tale unfolds in the kind of small town where everyone knows everyone else's business. Beautifully shot by Luca Bigazzi (The Consequences of Love, Il Divo) and with an appropriately haunting score by Tin Hat, this is an intelligent, gripping and moving thriller with a real investment in the lives and emotions of the characters. |
